North Hempstead Grabs Number Two Berth in Money Magazine’s Ranking of Nations “Best Places for a Healthy Retirement"

September 10, 2009, North Hempstead, NY—Supervisor Jon Kaiman and the North Hempstead Town Board announced today that for the second consecutive year, Money Magazine ranked North Hempstead among the nation’s “Best” municipalities in terms of life style.

Ranked 46th last year in the magazine’s annual list of 100 Best Places To Live in the United States, North Hempstead made the cut again, this time grabbing the number two berth in Money’s 2009 “Best Places for a Healthy Retirement” category.

The news was greeted with great pride at Town Hall.

“I’ve said it over and over that North Hempstead is indeed an extraordinary place,” said Supervisor Jon Kaiman. “But when a prestigious and respected publication like Money supports your contention two years in a row, it’s a source of great pride and welcomed recognition that we are doing a good job providing the high quality of life our constituents deserve.”

One outstanding program North Hempstead has initiated, Project Independence, is designed specifically to help seniors “age in place.”

With North Hempstead’s senior population growing—residents aged 75-84 increased 40% while those older than 85 increased 60% according to the last national census—the Town developed Project Independence to help support and empower seniors by providing an array of services through partnerships with government, service providers, businesses and the local community.

Money cited North Hempstead’s well maintained waterfront, a recreational playground for everyone, from sailors to kayakers. As well as pointing to North Hempstead’s network of medical facilities, Money also recognized the numerous nature trails, including Sands Point preserve, where paths wind through forests and meadows and along the beach. It also mentioned Harbor Links golf course with its close to 7,000 yards of green.

Anaheim, California, was ranked number one. Like North Hempstead, Money cited it for it’s abundance of medical facilities and active lifestyle.
