North Hempstead
Earns A+ for Recycling
Citizens Campaign for the Environment Commends Town for
Groundbreaking Environmental Programs
North Hempstead, NY—Supervisor Jon Kaiman and the North
Hempstead Town Council announced this week that the Town was
recently awarded an A+ for its environmental initiatives and
programs by the non-profit organization Citizens Campaign for
the Environment (CCE). Specifically, the group cited two Town
initiatives as groundbreaking - the School Recycling
Partnership Program and the pharmaceutical collection events.
“Citizens Campaign for the Environment is thrilled with the
new programs implemented by the Town of North Hempstead,” said
Adrienne Esposito, executive director of the non-profit,
non-partisan organization. “The school recycling program is
truly a model for the rest of the state and the pharmaceutical
take back program has already inspired other towns to follow
suit.”
“This is a tremendous recognition for the Town,” said
Supervisor Kaiman. “With a lot of hard work and support from
the community, the Town of North Hempstead has made recycling
a top priority. We hope in the years ahead to continue to lead
the way when it comes to protecting our environment.”
Overall North Hempstead, which chalked up 98 percent grade,
finished in a dead heat with the Town of Huntington at the top
of the list.
Financed by a Rauch Foundation grant, CCE’s 2009 Long Island
Recycling Report Card evaluated recycling initiatives in every
single town barring Shelter Island and Long Island’s only two
cities, Glen Cove and Long Beach. The report, for the first
time, also assessed school recycling initiatives. North
Hempstead’s Herricks School District—one of the town’s eight
of 11 districts with the recycling program—racked up a gold
star for its efforts.
“The town is so proud to receive this recognition,” added
Councilwoman Lee Seeman. “By protecting and safeguarding our
environment we are ensuring a better future for generations to
come.”
