Jon initiated a
School Recycling Partnership Program, an unprecedented effort
by local government to support and sustain an effective
recycling and environmental policy. of the eleven school
districts within the town are currently participating.
The town purchased recycling bins for every classroom in every
building in every participating school district. The town
arranged to pay for a private carter to pick up the
recyclables from each
participating school district and to bring them to the town’s
transfer station.
Furthermore, Jon directed the town to purchase scales for the
“Weigh-In” program where students weigh the recyclables two
days a week and calculate how much has been collected and,
thus, how many trees were saved each week.
Schools throughout
the town have now used the School Recycling Partnership
Program and made it into their own unique version. For
example, students are now creating recycling commercials which
are played on North Hempstead’s website and on North Hempstead
Television.
In fact, North Hempstead came in first place in a national
clean cities video competition featuring our recycling
program.

Jon also added an
e-waste component to the program where the town brought large
bins to each district and invited all residents to drop off
their e-waste for free.
